Other news in the Brewer household. We lost our dog Mason in March. He was 14 years old and well, it was tough watching him get old. It really made me stop and think about life and how quickly it goes by. It seems like just yesterday we were bringing Mason home as a little puppy and going to work with Lance at the Crowley Bus Barn. Our kids really had a hard time with Mason's passing much to my suprise. They wanted to get a dog a few days later, but we knew with a puppy, and working it would be hard, so we told them to wait until summer. Once we started thinking about our trips, we told the kids they may have to wait even longer. That didn't last long!! On Thursday night, July 1, we went to the SPCA here in town just to see. We went with the intent of looking only at miniature schnauzers. We found several dogs we loved and fell in love with a cute black/silver 2 year old half chihuahua/yorkshire terrier mix. It was love at first sight and she was coming home with us. That is until we asked if there were any other dogs - miniature schnauzers - to be exact. The lady (Babs) answered, "yes we do,and one I think you will love. Follow me." She took us into the "bathing" room and through a door that when she opened....a funky smell that I DON"T want to remember hit us. We all looked at each other and walked in. The dogs were going nuts...as if to say "pick me, pick me". We walked through and found several miniature schnauzers. One in particular was a precious little boy dog named "Snuffy". He was a feisty little thing! He was barking and licking and wanting some attention. He reminded us a lot of Mason and his personality. We played with him for a minute and headed down to see the female section. After looking around in there and finding a few we liked, we headed out, but not before passing Snuffy one more time. We stopped again and couldn't leave without one more lick. Now we were torn! We finally decided to head home for "The Best Lasagna Ever" (Thank you PW! My waist so totally thanks you! hee hee) and discuss our opinions of a boy dog or a girl dog. We still couldn't decide. We decided to ask if we could see Snuffy outside of the cage. The next day, they opened up at 11:00 and we went back. With our past experience of Mason, we did not want another feisty, barking, biting dog again. We asked if we could get Snuffy out of the cage and see his temperament away from the other dogs and if he didn't dart off, we would probably take him. She brought him to us and we played and loved on him. Several people came through and he never once barked, tired to escape or even bite. Babs (The lady helping us) even said that she thought about adopting him because she thought he was house broken.
That cinched it for us. Snuffy was going home with us! We signed the paper work and payed our fee and now we are the proud owners of another miniature schnauzer. We had to get another name for him, since Snuffy sounded to much like the elephant on Sesame Street. Our kids picked a new name, so meet Max (Maximus). Austin says our family is now complete! We are truly blessed! (He is such a GOOD dog! He sleeps through the night, and wakes up around 8:00 - and yes, he is house broken! SCORE!)
